For the longest time, I’ve been interested in art – that means all types of art. I love paintings, sculptures, music, photos, architecture, etc.
I think it was a gently growing love; something that started many years back but only recently was an active part of my life. I suppose that certain life events really help you see how important art is and how it can help you through tough times.
For example, I didn’t realise that music could mean so much to me until I was listening to Twenty One Pilots (Blurry Face album) in the car, on repeat, on the way to university. Every day was a challenge because of severe anxiety and their music helped me through. The film Divergent did too. I found inspiration in that art.
When me and my friend used to visit different cities together, we always made sure to go and visit the art galleries there. We accidentally visited a small one the one and I fell in love with this painting – that was about ten years ago. I longed to own a piece like that.
I finally commissioned my first painting after my horse and donkey passed away. I wanted them to be with me, always and I stumbled upon this artist over Facebook. I took the plunge and went for it. Part of me was scared to get scammed but she seemed to have built a huge community around her.
That painting was the start of something. I started collecting various paintings of hers and now have a collection in my apartment. I cannot even begin to express the joy I feel every day when I see them. Her talent is undeniable and a few of my family members aren’t that approving of my collection but it doesn’t bother me too much.
I’m thrilled to be in a position where I can support such a brilliant talent. A lot of people are only focused on money these days. How to make a quick turnover, what product will sell the best, how to become an influencer, that we have lost the time and care in viewing art.
When most musicians make songs, they do it with the intention to make a hit, not to purely express what they are feeling. It’s the same with artists. Sometimes they are put in a position to only paint what people want rather than what calls to their heart.
I think that’s why architecture also classes as art. When you look at the detail of these historical buildings, it’s incredible to see the detail and care put into every minute detail. You can’t help but to be in awe of certain buildings. It’s one of the reasons that I’m interested in travelling to so many cities. I may be a country girl at heart but I have an immense admiration for the history of cities.
Art helps us to connect with other people but also with ourselves. I even read in a magazine that looking at art can lower stress levels. Crazy, right? Considering it’s just looking at a picture?
There is beauty to be found everywhere and I think that by making time for art (whether creating or consuming), we are allowing a part of ourselves to open up. To see the world from a slightly different perspective and to appreciate life for what it is without having to look for a way to make a profit from it.
The truth is – life is beautiful. You just have to open your eyes to it.
